The Aldeburgh Festival have announced a focus on Jonathan Harvey at this year’s festival as a tribute to his memory. The programme has this to say:
Jonathan Harvey (1939–2012), like many of today’s leading British composers, was guided by Britten early on his career. Today he is a truly international figure. The contrast of his quintessentially Anglican English upbringing and his later turn to Buddhism is reflected in his all-encompassing, multi-layered, transcendental music. “Wonderfully warm, deeply human, Jonathan embodied the light that radiates from his works. Humble and fervent, he combined serene spirituality and pioneering freshness which made him one of the great exponents of music using electronics. We had long planned a Festival focus on his music. The announcement of his death as we went to print has plunged us all into great sadness. The 2013 Festival will be our farewell to this exquisite artist and our tribute to one of Britain’s great creative figures.”
