Pianist Richard Casey, of the New Music Players ensemble, will be embarking upon a tour with Ed Hughes in the opening months of the year. The program will include Harvey’s Tombeau de Messiaen, as well as a selection of pieces from Ligeti’s Deuxième Livre of Études. Martyn Harry’s Restraint for handcuffed pianist and pre-recorded tape will also be performed and Ed Hughes’s new composition, Night Music, for piano and electronics, will receive its premier. ‘Pianist Richard Casey reveals the fascinating soundworld of piano with live electronics, including the world premiere performance of Ed Hughes’s Night Music and Jonathan Harvey’s Tombeau de Messiaen, a ravishing exploration of the colours of the harmonic series. Ligeti’s virtuosic and expressive Études – piano studies – are his crowning achievement; written between 1988 and 1994, they are already classics.’
