RNCM Manchester Puts on ‘In Memoriam Harvey’ 2-Day Festival


The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester “commemorates the 75th anniversary of one of the UK’s most extraordinary composers, Jonathan Harvey,” this week through a 2-day festival entitled, “In Memoriam Harvey”. There will be a variety of performances throughout Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th October 2014 celebrating Jonathan’s work.

Jonathan_Harvey11The RNCM website describes Jonathan as “a composer who transformed the transcendental and the beyond into sound.” The festival includes “an all day installation of his electronic works, a talk by Harvey expert Dr Michael Downes, and culminates in his epic work Bhakti – a mystical exploration of the Sanskrit Hymns of the Rig Veda for chamber ensemble and quadrophonic tape.”

The works which will be performed include:

  • Mortuos Plango
  • Vivos Voco
  • Ritual Melodies and Mythic Figures
  • ff for solo piano
  • Nataraja for flute and piano
  • Death of Light, Light of Death for five players
  • Three Sketches for solo cello
  • The Riot for flute, bass clarinet and piano
  • Tombeau de Messiaen for solo piano
  • Bhakti for ensemble and electronics
